Whig Finality Resolution—Our whig friends in this quarter claimed to have been the patron saints of the compromise, and declared, before the meeting of the Baltimore Whig Convention, that they would not support any man for President, who was not rigidly, unreservedly, and unqualifiedly pledged to the compromise as a final adjustment of the matters therein contained. In this position, as in all others, they have been ingloriously defeated, and most contemptuously treated. Read the resolution which the whig convention enacted;

"That the series of measures commonly known as the compromise, including the fugitive slave law, are received and acquiesced in by the whig party of the United States as a settlement in principle and in substance—a final settlement of the dangerous and exciting questions which they embrace—and so far as the fugitive slave law is concerned, we will maintain the same, and insist on its strict enforcement, until time and experience shall demonstrate the necessity of further legislation, to guard against evasion or abuse, not impairing its present efficiency; and we deprecate all further agitation of the slavery question as dangerous to our peace, and will discountenance all efforts at the renewal or continuance of such agitation in Congress or out of it."

"Until time and experience shall demonstrate the necessity of further legislation." Was there ever such sophistry—such fossil poetry! This pledge is no pledge at all. In all the northern states the whigs declare that already "time and experience demonstrated the necessity of further legislation." They hold that the fugitive law is evasive and abusive of the constitution, and the religious and political rights of the people who are opposed to slavery. They deem it a disgrace to the statute books of the country, and have filled the tables of Congress with petitions for its repeal. Yet our whig friends in this quarter, who have rolled up their eyes in holy horror, at the mention of any infraction of the compromise, have struck hands with Greeley, Seward and Hale over its bleeding carcass. The whig press here tell us that Gen. Scott, the chosen champion of the slaveholders, should not be distasteful to southern whigs!
