Wild - Tempered Father
Kills Estranged Wife

VAN NUYS, Calif. (AP)--A wild-tempered young father who admits he killed his estranged wife and her parents, then tipped police so his baby son could be saved, was captured at a motel today.

Raymond J. Hudgens, 22, checked into the motel in nearby Sherman Oaks under his own name last night.

Though Hudgens had hinted he might fight to the death rather than surrender, there was no indication of violence in first reports of his arrest.

It was Hudgens' early morning telephone call to the police in this Los Angeles suburb that led Arizona officers to a cabin six miles from Kingman, Ariz., within view of busy U.S. Highway 66. There they found, fatally shot, the bodies of Hudgens' wife, Grace, 20, and her parents, Myron Young, 67, and Dorothy Young, 55, who moved there from Van Nuys two years ago.

Nearby was 14-month-old Raymond Hudgens Jr., "the only thing that knocked me back into reality," the distraught slayer wrote.

The child reportedly hadn't been fed for about 24 hours.
