Full Text

Prendergast, the cowardly assassin of Mayor Harrison, catches it in the neck; at least the jury after an hour's deliberation said that it should be broken. The verdict is in accord with the crime and a lesser penalty would have been an outrage. Already imitators of the assassin have sprung up all over the country, but the prompt conviction of this fiend will put a check on notoriety seeking cranks of the Guiteau and Prendergast stripe. The only fear now is that that anarchist at heart, Gov. Altgeld, will interfere with the execution of the judgment, but unless he wishes to bring himself into greater odium and further disgrace the party that elected him, he will let the law take its course.

After being out a little over an hour the jury in the Prendergast case returned a verdict, holding the prisoner responsible to the law for the murder of Carter Harrison and fixing his punishment at death.
