Of especial interest to those attending the Market Day conducted by the ladies of the Old Fort and Siloam churches last week, was the collection of hand-made bed covers and quilts on display.
Claiming the most distinction from the standpoint of age was the tufted bed spread owned by Mrs. Geo. Hyams, which was made by her grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Dyson Hemphill, 130 years ago. This piece was hand woven with an elaborate design which entirely covered the spread in tufting which was so popular at that time.
Another bed spread on display was one made by Aunt Betsy Moffett 110 years ago, which was also hand woven and decorated.
The third white spread of beautiful pattern was made in 1850 by Mrs. Margaret Greenlee. A hand woven coverlet of intricate design, made in colors of wool and linen, which received much attention, was made by Mrs. Mattie McEntire in 1855.
A crocheted bed spread of a later design was made by Mrs. W. H. Greenlee in 1915. Mrs. Greenlee also had on display a quilt of the Double Irish chain design made 45 years ago and a quilt of a Grecian chain pattern made in 1931. A bedspread made in 1892 by Mrs. Mattie Greenlee was also on display.
The expert needlework, evidenced by these ladies of a former day would win the admiration of all lovers of fine needlecraft.
