Full Text
George H. Sterling was a weigher in the New York custom house. He discharged his duties faithfully, but the Republican and Mugwump papers attacked him with bitterness. They assumed that under the civil service rules he could not gain 66 marks of credit in his answers out of 100, and that on this account he could not weigh a ton of pig iron correctly. Finally, they got him out of the custom house. Now, Governor Hill has looked him all over and found him to be an intelligent and honest man, and has conferred upon him the appointment of port warden, a better office than that of weigher. Hence up to date Mr. Sterling is one point ahead.
