Hope America Stay Out of War

WASHINGTON, July 1 (AP) President Roosevelt reaffirmed the hope that America could stay out of the war. He drew a distinction, however, between hope and belief, but also said, at the press conference, that it is obvious how anyone would vote in a poll whether this country should plunge actively into the conflict against the Axis powers.

Certainly everyone is against war, he said, just as everyone is against sin.

The President preferred not to comment on Secretary Knox's declaration at Boston last night, that the Navy should be used immediately to clear the Atlantic of the German menace, so that war supplies could be delivered to Britain.
