Pardon Came Quickly.

Pine Bluff, May 5.-Ulysses Altheimer, son of Louis Altheimer, was tonight released from the Jefferson county jail, after serving a portion of a twenty-four hours' sentence assessed on him by Judge A. B. Grace of the Eleventh judicial circuit for contempt. He was released on a pardon from Governor Davis.

Young Altheimer was a witness for the defense yesterday in a gambling case which was on trial before Judge A. B. Grace, and one of the questions asked him by counsel for the state was whether he was not a gambler. He refused to answer the question, and the prosecuting attorney appealed to the court, who ordered him to answer. At first Altheimer still refused to comply, but finally he said, addressing the judge, that he did not consider himself a gambler, but visited gambling houses the same as the judge did.

Altheimer then left the stand and the court room. Before he had gone far he was overtaken by an officer, who served on him a warrant for contempt. He was taken before Judge Grace this morning and sentenced to serve twenty-four hours in jail, and was immediately sent to the county jail.

This afternoon he telephoned Governor Davis and was granted a pardon.

Louis Altheimer was a witness before the committee of the legislature which investigated the controversy between Governor Davis and the other members of the penitentiary board over the purchase of the Cummins place. His testimony was favorable to Governor Davis.

Judge Grace and Governor Davis are bitter enemies.

There are those who say Governor Davis has no right to pardon a person sentenced for contempt of court.
