Televiewers Not Interested in Political Shows

NEW YORK (AP)—A television research organization reported today the two big political conventions flopped as attractions on home screens.

The survey was made by Sindlinger & Co., of Philadelphia, which reported it polled 1,000 set owners daily, altogether cross-sectioning watchers in 238 counties from coast to coast.

These were some of the findings:

The politicians were watched by an average 33 million viewers, compared to 54 million drawn by peak commercial shows. One evening, only one-quarter of the nation's sets were turned on.

Films and sports events frequently outdrew the conventions in communities where non-network shows were on the air. And radio listening jumped to a 10-year high as fans sought musical relief from oratory.
