The stampede of the Alien voters in the North and Northwest, from Buchanan to Fremont, is beginning to open the eyes of his followers, and they almost imagine they see the hand writing on the wall. They feel that the lose of that vote sounds the death knell to all their fond anticipations of spoils, for they know that its loss seals Buchanan's fate; and places the contest between Mr. Fillmore and Fremont; and this will be patent to the whole country in a very brief period. The Germans of the Northwest, in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, and they compose nearly half the voting population of those States, are already holding immense meetings, and ratifying en masse the nomination of Fremont. And Robert Emmitt, the great leader of the Irish in this country, is leading off in the same line of policy. They are all for "free speech, free soil and free labor, against slave labor." These are the sentiments of the men, who Mr. Stephens declared a year ago, were such reliable and true friends of the South!
"Since Mr. Buchanan has swallowed the Democratic Filibustering platform, (says the Augusta, Ga., Chronicle,) it is very wisely remarked that he has ceased to have any individual identity as a politician; he is only so many planks loosely fastened together, or a mere beam in the eye. The Red Republican flag of France, picked up in the gory streets of Paris, waves ominously over the platform, and men who reverence the name of Washington, and who would wish to see our Republic as eternal as God and truth carefully avoid coming in contact with that flag. The American party is every day obtaining new converts as the fact becomes wider known that it is the only one that will conserve the Union, quell civil discord and foreign strife, and advance the civilization of the world."
