The 15 white youths under indictment for the hammer slaying of a Negro high school student March 11, pleaded innocent in Criminal Court Wednesday.
The state has announced it will seek the death penalty for the boys who rocked the Windy City with this hideous crime.
Chief Justice Wilbert F. Crowley, before whom they were arraigned, set April 17 as the date for hearing preliminary defense motions and assigned the cases to Judge Elmer N. Holmgren.
Thirteen of the youths have been indicted for murder in the slaying of Arnold Palmer, 17, and two others are under indictment as accessories after murder for hiding the hammer used in the slaying. Joseph Schwartz, 17, has admitted, police said, hitting Palmer on the head with a hammer as he waited for a bus on a South Side street. Police termed the attack unprovoked.
