Gas Elusive at 7,000 Feet

Ligonier, Pa., Aug 8.- Drilling nearly a mile and a half through the earth's crust into the heated substrata, gas men have made unsuccessful efforts to strike wells with which to replenish the steadily dwindling supply of gas in this district. Drilling crews of the Peoples Natural Gas Company of Pittsburgh have penetrated nearly 7,000 feet without results.

The Ligonier operation is the deepest hole in the world that has been drilled for gas. The work has been in progress four years. The 7,000 foot mark was passed on the fourth birthday of the operation.
