NEW YORK (UPI) Former Gov. Raymond Gary of Oklahoma said Monday integration of public schools in his state had improved race relations and saved the state money.
"A single fist fight was the only violence that occurred when we integrated our schools," said Gary, whose term as governor ended last January.
Gary, in an article in Look magazine, said that teachers' salaries have risen from an average of $3500 to $4700 because of an increased efficiency in the state's school system.
"Forty-two hundred classrooms have been built," he said. "Our unified schools save us one million dollars a year, as anticipated. The morale of our students is high."
