SOUND BUSINESS
Although faced with the biggest budget in the history of Juneau, our city councilmen see their way clear to make it through next year and wind up in the black after raising the tax rate by only one mill.
A nest egg of $35,000 in surplus war bonds may be drawn upon, but not necessarily.
It looks to us as if the people of this city owe a vote of thanks to the men who are devoting their time towards keeping Juneau on sound footing financially.
We doubt if any city in Alaska is in such good shape financially. As a matter of fact, some communities we could mention are in a bad way-hopelessly in debt with no hope of getting out for a long time.
One city is so hard pressed that additional city taxes on liquor and gasoline have been levied, duplicating both Territorial and Federal taxes.
Juneau's city administration has been sound and wise. Crackpot schemes for doing away with the taxpayers' funds have been discarded.
It is a credit to the councilmen and our mayor that even though the costs of running the city have almost doubled in the past five years the costs have been met with a minimum of hardship under the same tax system and with improved efficiency.
