Champion Shows More 'Pep' Yesterday; Gibbons And Greb Watch Work-Out
ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., June 28.-
Jack Dempsey took a leaf from Georges Carpentier's training program today when he staged a private workout after announcement had been made that he would box in public. He worked lightly for 15 minutes in the shed back of his camp with only newspapermen and a few friends as spectators.
Several hundred persons sweltered outside the camp in the heat, hoping that the champion would change his mind.
After the high speed workout in secret yesterday, Dempsey began tapering off this afternoon and boxed only two rounds in addition to two rounds of bag punching.
He limbered up with some bending stunts after the gloves. Dempsey perspired profusely after slugging the inflated bag for three minutes and the heavy stuffed bag for another three minute round.
The experts regarded Dempsey's boxing more favorably than they did when they last saw him in action on Sunday. He boxed with more energy and "pep," they thought, and was hitting harder, except when he penned his sparring partners in a corner.
Then he would content himself by cuffing them around until they could break away and escape to the center of the ring.
Dempsey stepped the first round with Eddie O'Hare and the second with the veteran Larry Williams.
O'Hare was on the defensive. A few seconds after they started, Dempsey let fly a left hook that hung O'Hare on the ropes, but made no attempt to follow the advantage.
Although Dempsey did not box with the full of his punches against Williams, he jarred the veteran to his heels with solid hooks to the body, ripping in at close range.
After a walk this morning Dempsey jumped on the scales and balanced the beam at 193 pounds. He probably will reduce two more pounds in the final days and lose another pound when he dries out Friday.
Tom Gibbons, the St. Paul heavyweight, and Harry Greb, a light heavyweight from Pittsburg, who regarded themselves as prospective opponents later, watched the performance. They said Dempsey appeared in perfect condition. Matt Hinkel, the Cleveland referee, said Dempsey worked slower than when he was training for Jess Willard at Toledo two years ago, but appeared stronger and more determined. "It's my judgment that he is in great shape," he added.
Rumors flying around Atlantic City that Dempsey had broken with his manager, Kearns, were denied tonight by Dempsey.
