Philanthropists and War.—The American philanthropists are all opposed to war in other countries, but at home it is a different matter. Sumner is lecturing upon "The Duel between France and Germany, with its Lesson to Civilization." He asserts that the dismemberment of France is not the only guarantee of peace that is required : the disarmament of all Europe is necessary to general peace, and this is demanded by civilization. Thus we see Sumner's, and the school of humanitarians of which he is a sort of leader, inveighing against war elsewhere, while in this country war could not be too bloody and ruthless for them. What is still worse, there is no measure of punishment of the southern people, no disfranchisement, no oppression too odious for the revengeful and rancorous stomachs of these philanthropists. All the tyrannies and persecutions that engender resistance and war are to them proper and grateful as long as they are visited upon the unfortunate people who differ from them and oppose their fanatical dogmas. But they cannot bear to see the rod wielded by others than themselves, and cannot tolerate war and bloodshed save to support their doctrines, and when waged for them too much blood cannot be shed.
