Washington, Nov. 17.—Regional educational conferences for the purpose of discussing the educational situation at this time, and school measures to be presented to the legislatures of the several states the coming year, to the end that needed legislation be obtained, are to be held, according to Dr. P. P. Claxton, commissioner of education in a number of centers during this month and December. The idea of Dr. Claxton is to afford opportunities for those interested in constructive work along school lines to attend conferences reasonably near to their homes, instead, as was anticipated at first of holding one big conference in Washington.
In the elections held November 2 constitutional amendments affecting the future of the public schools were voted upon in some states. In those cases in which amendments were authorized, legislation for the purpose of carrying into effect the mandates of the people will be necessary. This fact, together with the increasing interest throughout the country in the improvement of the public school system, the broadening of it to the extent that it be the foundation of all primary education in the United States, makes of great importance the educational conferences to be held under the direction of the Commissioner of Education.
