MELANCHOLY EVENT.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Elisha Howe, Agent of the Hope Cotton Manufacturing Company, fell through the scuttle, from the third to the first story of Store No. 10, Mason's Buildings. Mr. H. was examining the quality of several bags of cotton, adjacent to the scuttle, and in extricating the gimlet which he used from one of the bags, he lost his balance, fell backwards, and, in an instant, was precipitated to the lower floor. He was immediately taken up in a state of insensibility, his head shockingly fractured, and expired in a few minutes after. Mr. H. was a highly meritorious and valuable citizen, aged about 35 years, and has left an amiable wife and one child to deplore the loss of an exemplary husband and parent.
