OIL FIELDS BURNING

Another Disastrous Fire Breaks Out In the Texas Oil Fields

Beaumont, Tex., Oct. 8.—Another great fire, more disastrous than the conflagration of a few weeks ago, is sweeping over the oil fields here, causing a property loss of thousands of dollars, and possible loss of life. It is rumored that twelve persons have perished, but the report cannot be confirmed at this hour.

The fire broke out shortly before eleven o'clock at night and with remarkable rapidity it spread to the many derricks in the Hogg-Swayne tract. The encroachment of the flames was so rapid that many people were caught in the fiery path, and at midnight it is thought that twenty persons may have perished.

The fire started in a peculiar manner. Shortly before midnight a workman lifted off the top of his lantern to blow out the light. The atmosphere was heavily laden with gas, and in an instant there was a flash, followed by a sheet of flame.
