Full Text

Deplorable Accident. A laboring man was suddenly killed, yesterday, and two others were frightfully, perhaps fatally, injured, by the fall of a scaffold on which they were at work, being masons' tenders, or hod-men. The work on which they had been employed is a house at the corner of First Avenue and Second street, and the scaffold was at the third story. The slain man was named Dennis Couroy; the other two are Patrick Kevins and Andrew Leary. The mason whom they were supplying with bricks and mortar had a marvellous escape, saving himself by leaping with instinctive rapidity upon the scaffold within the building. It is alleged in most of the morning papers that the scaffold was so obviously weak and insecure that three hodmen had refused to trust themselves upon it, only the day before, and had been discharged for so refusing. The coroner's inquest was to be held this morning. The wounded men were quickly attended by three physicians, one of whom was Dr. Archer, the coroner, but little could be done for them until their removal to the hospital. One of them is said to have both legs broken.

P. S.—1/4 past 12 o'clock.—The coroner is now investigating the matter. He has summoned sixteen jurors, and the evidence will not be concluded till a late hour in the day. Neither Kevins nor Leary is dead, but they remain in a very precarious state.—N. Y. Commercial Advertiser of Thursday.
