In compliance to the recommendation of the Constituted authorities of our country, Saturday last, the Twenty Second of February (formerly "among the first on the bright page of American festivals") was observed in this town as a day of solemn mourning, for the death of our great political father, GEORGE WASHINGTON.--The performances of the day were conducted in a manner which did credit to the town. The morning was solemnized by the tolling of bells, and the display of the U. S. flag at half mast on the shipping;--and the general suspension of business declared the sincerity of our grief.
At 11 o'clock public devotion was commenced at the Rev. Mr. Kellogg's meeting house by appropriate vocal and instrumental music performed in a superior manner, by a numerous band composed mostly of gentlemen of the town. The Rev. Mr. Kellogg addressed the throne of Grace, in a judicious and truly excellent prayer. The Hon. Isaac Parker then pronounced an able and finished Eulogy, which even surpassed the high expectations of the public; and which was too meritorious to be mentioned in common newspaper encomiums--The language was elegant and correct--void of gasconade, and delivered in an easy and unaffected style of eloquence.--The public will probably be soon furnished with a production so honorable to the occasion; as it is understood the Selectmen have applied for a copy for the press.
