The Fort Smith, Arkansas, New Era says:
On Monday, there was sold at auction, by the United States marshal, the effects of a man found murdered some months ago in the Cherokee Nation. There was a good light wagon, two horses, a carpenter's chest and tools, and shotgun, together with a lot of clothing, etc. A man named McAllister was accused at the time of the murder and arrested, but on preliminary trial was acquitted for want of evidence. Sometime afterward he was wanted again for further investigation of the murder, but could not be found, nor has he been found yet. Among the effects was a small English Bible with clasp, having the name of Niels Martenson written on the fly-leaf, and a Testament in the Norwegian language, also a letter addressed to Mr. N. Martinson, box 28, Fort Scott, Kansas, postmarked Okmulgee, C. N., October 20, 1869. There was also a letter written in the Norwegian language. This letter is a recommendation or certificate from the Rev. P. W. Van Wylich, of Martenson's good standing in his church and of his being an excellent mechanic. It is dated Greve, March 27, 1857.
These points may give a clue to the relations of the murdered man, if he has any, of his sad fate, and also to get on the track of the murderer.
