For the ARGUS.
COMMUNICATION.

It has been with pleasure observed that a taste for Religious Books has, within a short time, encreased very considerably both in this City and in the Country. It has often happened that persons, whose attention to Religion has been recently awakened, and who are desirous to grow "wise unto salvation," are at a loss to know what Books to select as best calculated to answer their purposes. To all such persons the writer of this takes the liberty to recommend Doddridge's Rise and Progress of Religion. The author was a man of truly liberal sentiments, of extensive learning, of considerable genius, and of fervent piety. The little work here recommended, has been translated into different languages, and has met with the decided approbation of Christians of all denominations. The language is plain and simple, so that the most illiterate can understand it; easy & elegant, so that the learned, & even the fastidious will not be offended by it. Perhaps no human composition has been more useful to humble enquirers after truth than this little volume. A learned & pious Divine has said in relation to it. "Were I cut off from all human society, and could I have with me in my solitude only three books, of these the Bible should be one, and Doddridge's Rise and Progress another."
