MR. BETTS HOME
What He Says About That Federal Office,

NEVER WAS CANDIDATE
Kinney Likely to Remain Until Term Expires.

The Hartford Courant contains the following today:

"Washington, Dec. 17.-Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Betts of New Haven, who have been visiting Washington friends, have left for Connecticut. Mr. Betts is not, never has been and never will be a candidate for collector of internal revenue at New Haven. This statement is made by one of his closest friends, together with the fact that the newspaper talk of the rivalry for this office between Mr. Betts and Robert O. Laton and the former's presence in Washington at this time on that account is extremely distasteful to him.

"For one thing, there are no exact terms for the collector, and the bond of Collector Kinney does not run out for a year or two yet. It is likely that he will be a candidate for reappointment. But if he is not, and quite possibly in any case, the office will probably go to Mr. Eaton. A way might be found to accomplish the appointment of Mr. Eaton, following the removal of Mr. Kinney before that time, but there is no reason to suppose that anything of the sort will be attempted.

"Mr. Eaton has been prominently mentioned in connection with the nomination for the New Haven county shrievalty, but it is understood here that his preference would be for the collectorship, although neither matter comes up for decision for some time yet."

Mr. Betts has arrived here from Washington. He said today to a representative of The Union that the Washington correspondent of the Courant got the facts in the above dispatch just about right, so far as he was concerned.
