JUNEAU, (AP) - Governor Egan has suffered an acute pancreatic attack, his doctor reported today.
"There is no doubt that this new development is going to lengthen his convalescent period," the medical statement added.
Dr. William Whitehead said a pancreas disturbance caused the discomfort suffered by the Governor during the past two days. The condition, he said, developed after major surgery was performed a week ago.
"It is not an uncommon occurrence," a medical statement said. "In fact, it develops in about 50 per cent of cases, following the type of surgery that Governor Egan underwent."
Egan was operated on January 6 for removal of his gall bladder.
No word on when Egan might be expected to leave the hospital was forthcoming. However it appeared likely the Governor would not be able to deliver in person his first message to the State Legislature when it convenes in less than two weeks.
The additional convalescent period raised doubts that Egan will be able to participate in the inaugural festivities scheduled at Juneau for February 7. No comment as yet from officials planning the celebration was made, however.
