Full Text

Trembling Tildenites.

Despite the persistent boasts of Tilden men, their confidence is evidently materially shaken, and during the last week their desperation is shown by the abortive effort to get up a respectable call of business men as a counter movement to that inviting Evarts' speech.

The latter was signed by President Jones, of the Chemical bank, and many others, who, like him, subscribed liberally weeks ago to Democratic funds, but have since taken alarm from the evidence of a commercial disaster likely to be precipitated by Tilden's election.

Among the two hundred signers of the Democratic call there are scarcely any prominent business houses, though hundreds of Democratic houses peremptorily refused their signatures. Forty-nine signatures are known to the city directory. Fifteen giving one address are porters, clerks or boys in Claflin & Co's store, which firm is notably Republican. The same fraudulent bragging appears in the gambling rooms, where sham pools are now selling nightly, largely in favor of Tilden, without the least apparent reason for such change since a week. These are evidently mock sales.
