Veteran Slain at Homecoming Picnic

PRINCETON, N. J.(ANP)- A 19-year-old army veteran was killed instantly early Tuesday by a shotgun blast.

It was fired, according to Mercer County authorities, during a quarrel between a group of picnickers at Lake Carnegie and visitors and white residents of a nearby home.

James Roberts, 30, white, of Princeton, later was arraigned on a murder charge in the death of Harvey Hoagland, also of Princeton.

Roberts was committed without bail to the Mercer County jail at Trenton after a hearing before Louis Gerber, recorder of Princeton township. The murder charge against Roberts was filed by Assistant County Prosecutor Frank H. Lawton.

Hoagland, who served two and a half years overseas, died instantly when he was struck in the face by a blast of buckshot from a 12-gauge shotgun shortly after 12:30 a. m.

Lawton said the argument started after Watts asked the picnickers who were passing his home to be less noisy. Roberts obtained the shotgun and fired once over the head of the crowd. Lawton said Roberts then admitted firing the weapon a second time at the group.
