Students of the High School were given an opportunity to hear of progress in the Philippines Friday morning when Capt. Ralph Yates of the Prestabulary Force of the U. S. and a student of our High School some years ago gave a lecture. Capt. Yates says that the Filipinos are by no means savages and uncivilized, but says they are very intelligent for the most part. He told the students about the geography of the whole group of islands. He then told us the number of tribes, described the important ones, told also about their habits and customs etc. He also related some of his duties and adventures which were very interesting. A topic that caused laughter was a Philippine wedding. Their occupations were mentioned and we find out from that, that they raise things of great importance and of great value. Different events were told about which were connected with his duties. The lecture certainly was interesting and was greatly enjoyed by all of the students and the members of the faculty. The Normal students also came over. Capt. Yates has been in the Philippines for seven years.
