For the Patriot.
Mr. Editor—It is really amusing to perceive the very close connexion between love and poetry. About two years since my chum became acquainted with Miss H., an accomplished lady, whose ill health obliged her to leave the home of her childhood and the scenes of her youth for a more genial climate;—and from the moment of her departure his head has been full of nothing but poetry, poetry, poetry:—here is a specimen of his versifying, which I took the liberty of filching from his table.
S. G.
O that my eyes once more could dwell
Upon those beaming eyes,
Whose soft, enchanting, music spell
Bid countless feelings rise.
Some kind memento of thy worth,
A ring forsooth I've got,
And giv'st thou more? in humble truth,
I ask, I ask it not.
It is not gold, a worthless gem,
In which thy treasure lies,
Thou wear'st a richer diadem
Which I e'en deign to prize.
I ask not boundless stores of wealth
To be thy only show,
I ask for that departed health,
To beam upon thy brow.
O then, upon that neck so fair,
Around which tresses twine,
And hid behind thy flowing hair,
The rose, now dim, may shine
