Our Fishermen.-There are nearly two thousand fishing smacks, and between five and six thousand young, brave, hardy fishermen, at the present time out of employment. The latter have been literally nurtured and cradled in storms; are full of patriotism, and are willing to bestow all their energies in the service of their country. Government is in the market for pilot boats. Why not give employment to these men and their craft, which are the swiftest and more efficient upon the ocean in foul weather, and built expressly to withstand tempests. Their owners handle them as jockeys manage their horses on a race course. Their wants are small and their expectations of recompense limited Give them a trial. Let a hundred smacks be employed as an experiment, and, if found efficient, let the whole number be enlisted in the federal service. No money could be expended with a better result.
