UNITED STATES SHIP BOSTON,
Leghorn Roads, Nov. 3, 1830.
After a short stay at Algiers, which as we anticipated, we found in an unsettled state, we sailed for Tunis, where we remained for about the space of ten days.
Our Consul there received us with the marked hospitality that he has ever extended to our countrymen. The city of Tunis is in daily expectation of an important change, from the extreme illness of the Dey, to whom we were introduced by our Consul (Dr. Heap).
I think in my last, I wrote you that it was the intention of Commodore Porter, to remain at this place, which in fact he did purpose, but as it will take some time for the necessary instructions to reach him from the U. States, instructions which from the great revolution that has occurred in the powers to which he was commissioned as our representative are all-important—he has determined, as the best mode of passing his time in the mean while, to visit the principal cities on the coast of Italy.
We accordingly left Tunis and sailed for Naples, which we reached about the 20th of September, where we were joined by the frigate Constellation and Fairfield,—the officers and crew of both in health.
The Dey of Algiers has been residing at Fortici, a few miles from Naples, but is at present at this place.
It is probable we shall sail in a few days for Genoa, after which it is thought we shall return to Mahon. The Commodore has enjoyed fine health, as also the officers and crew of our ship.
