Transfers Of Leading Church
Groups Told By Methodists

BALTIMORE, Md. — Transfers involving two of the leading congregations of Negro Methodists were announced simultaneously Monday (April 11) by Bishop Edgar A. Love of the Baltimore Area and Bishop Frederick B. Newell of the New York Area.

Occasioned by the retirement from the active ministry of the Rev Dr. Charles Y. Trigg, for 13 years pastor of Salem Church, 129th Street and Seventh Avenue, New York City, the Rev. Joshua O. Williams, for eight years pastor of the Sharp Street Methodist Church, Baltimore, has been appointed to the Salem Church in New York.

A Bronx pastor, the Rev Edward G. Carroll of Epworth Methodist Church, will replace the Rev. Mr. Williams at the historic Baltimore church.

Dr. Trigg went to New York in 1942 from Metropolitan Church in Baltimore. He had previously served also as pastor of the Sharp Street Church in the Maryland metropolis.

FIRST PASTOR

Dr. Williams is a native of Texas. He was educated at Wiley College Marshall, Texas, Boston University and the University of California and the University of Southern California. He just concluded a television series of Sunday night programs in Baltimore known as "The Pastor's Study." He was the first Negro pastor in the city to be presented on this program. He has held pastorates in Oxon Hill, Md. Parkersburg, W. Va. and Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Rev. Mr. Carroll was educated at Morgan College, Baltimore, and Yale University. He travelled in India for a year with Dr. Howard Thurman following graduation from Yale. He served as chaplain in World War II, hitting the beaches of Normandy and helping to build the Alcan Highway from Alaska to Canada. He was formerly a national worker with the YMCA and has served as assistant pastor at Saint Marks Methodist Church in New York City.

Both pastors will assume their new duties on Sunday, May 29. The Salem church has a membership of 3,400, one of the largest in Methodism. The Sharp Street Church has a membership of approximately 1,000.
