NEWPORT. May 15.—The Rebels have within this Fortnight past begun a very hot Persecution at North Kingston, Exeter, Greenwich, &c. in W. Some time since, mentioned the Murder of Mr. Slocum; and the Imprisonment of his two Sons. They have now taken his unhappy Widow, and carried her likewise to Providence Goal, nothing appearing satisfactory to their Vengeance but the Destruction of this whole Family. In short, their Conduct has been such, that many who were attached to their Measures, are now their most violent Opposers, being thoroughly convinced, that those Demagogues who have promised them Liberty: and pretended an Attachment to them and their Families, are the most inhuman of Tyrants, and the greatest Destroyers of civil Society: — About Twenty of those injured and abused Men who had been for some Days hiding in the Bush, made their Escape and arrived Here on Tuesday last gaining safe of their Neighbours and Friends, where they have been confined in Goals and in Irons, They Yesterday obtained Permission, to go to the Narraganset Shore, where they brought off the following Persons, who will at least remain in Refuge, for their much injured Friends. The most of them have joined Col. Wightman's Regiment of Loyal New-Englanders, and seem determined to have Satisfaction for the many Injuries they have received. The Persons brought off were, Charles Tillinghast, one of the Committee of North Kingston, William Watson, Collector of the Road Tax for Kingston, and Oliver Spink, an Officer in the Rebel Army. The Rebels have taken a Sloop belonging to Mr. John Watson of this Town; one belonging to Capt. Messley, and one belonging to New-York, and carried them into Stonington. Capt. McEwen, Mr. Job, and several others who were taken in them were brought here on Tuesday Night, by a Flag to be exchanged. The Privateer that took the above is owned by the following Persons, Palmer, Captain Nathan Palmer, Jonathan Waldron. A Number of Transports arrived here on Tuesday. By Persons from different Parts Country we are informed that every Cruelty is continually practiced upon unhappy Men who discover their Attachment to Government.
