Prairie Echoes.
BY WILD-BIRD.
Softly come the twilight hours
As the day's fond smiles decline,
Lighting blue, aerial bowers;
Evening's conscious tapers shine
With a soft and hallowed light.
Gently flow the silvered rills,
Tween the verdant, sloping hills
Oh, how beautiful is night!
Now the wild-winds tune their harps
On whose trembling, airy chords
Light and gentle fingers glide;
Lowly breathed, sweet spirit-words
Chanted in a gentle swell,
Floating o'er the vernal plains,
When the holy music wanes
Echoed by the distant dell.
Brightly rests the diamond dew
On this green and flowing sea
That, rolling to the starry west
Is lost in woodland majesty.
Bending gently from on high
Gemed in every azure fold
With the restless orbs of gold,
Droops the starry canopy.
O we're rustics, young and wild,
And our hearts are large and warm,
Pride and Fashion come not here
Blighting Nature's holy charm.
'Mong the violets and roses
Let us wander wide and free
O'er this fair immensity,
As the hymn of even closes,
And golden stars shed smiles of rest
O'er the Prairies of the West!
If angel-hopes on earth appear
Then may mortals find them here.
