About the year 1718, when the brother of Dr. FRANKLIN was about to establish a newspaper in Boston, his friends endeavored to dissuade him from the undertaking, alleging, that there was one newspaper already in that town, and that one was sufficient for America. There are now fourteen newspapers in this State, and perhaps five times that number in the United States. We may from this form some idea of the increase of population in this country, and we cannot but form high expectations of the improvement in virtue and science, which will be diffused amongst the people through these channels of intelligence. There are to our knowledge, 5 papers printed in N. Hampshire—10 in Massachusetts—4 in R. Island—8 in Connecticut—10 in New-York—2 in N. Jersey—1 in Delaware—14 in Pennsylvania—4 in Maryland—3 in N. Carolina—6 in Virginia—5 in S. Carolina—and 3 in Georgia—Besides papers in Vermont, Kentucky, &c. And these are published daily, or one, two, or three times in a week.
