The President's Reply to a Deputation of Slaveholders.
To-day a deputation of slaveholders from Prince George's co., Md., waited on the President to protest against colored soldiers being sent up Patuxent river to carry off the slaves from the plantations, and enlist them as soldiers. The deputation feared serious consequences would ensue if this was not stopped, as the presence of black soldiers among their slaves tended to excite them to acts of violence.
The President replied that so far as using colored soldiers for this business was concerned that might be obviated and white soldiers sent to collect slaves, but that the Government had determined to compel all slaves suitable for soldiers, not only in Maryland, but in all the Border States, to enter the army as soldiers; that they would be taken and put into military service at once, without regard to the wishes of their owners.
The necessities of the country demand it, and it must be done. Nothing was said during the interview about compelling the owners of slaves to permit enlistments among them.
