Attempt to Kill Capt. Goodwin of the
Portland Brig Josefa.
Washington, July 24.
Consul-General Ramon O. Williams reports to the state department from Havana that he has discharged Charles Flood, second mate of the brig Josefa of Portland, Me., without pay.
The circumstances of the case are quite interesting, according to Mr. Williams's report.
He says: "George A. Goodwin, the master of the Josefa, reported to me that Flood, on the day previous, had attempted to kill him. I thereupon arrested Flood and made an investigation. It appears that on the afternoon of the 4th, while sitting on the cabin steps reading a book, the first officer was assaulted by the second mate who came up behind him and standing over him struck him a severe blow in the face and over the eyes with the butt end of a revolver. It does not appear that the man was drunk, or had received any provocation whatever. The blow was a murderous one." Flood claimed that he was drunk at the time. He was discharged and no other opportunity offering for him to sail, he was sent to New York on the first vessel, the Cienfuegos.
Consul Williams forwarded to the department the pistol with which the assault was made.
