The ship Garrick, at New York, brought London papers to 12th ult.
The commercial quotations show a continued increase in the cotton trade, with a slight increase of price.
The result of the late Presidential election in this country continues to be the subject of interminable remark in the British journals--the leading tory journals continuing as lachrymose and angry at the defeat of Clay as they were upon the first receipt of the intelligence.
Political news is of little importance. The French papers continue to comment on the election of Mr. Polk--some, pretty severely. They are also making fresh stir regarding the conduct of a certain Capt. Hunt, at the Society islands.
The correspondent of the Journal of Commerce says:
"Manufacturers are querulous for a reduction of the duty on cotton--it will be effected, and undoubtedly made merely nominal. It is their only hope of supplying at a profit the markets of the East. Duties upon tobacco will, perhaps, also be abated: and many agriculturists are contending for a withdrawal of the malt tax."
Mr. Everett, the American minister, was soon to return home.
