Senatorial.

The 17th Senatorial District composed of Anderson and Allen counties, will this year elect a senator. Allen county has had this office once and Anderson twice, the present incumbent Hon. L. K. Kirk being from the latter county. He is not as we understand a candidate for re-election. According to the express understanding, and in accordance with the idea of previous conventions, Allen county will be entitled to that office this year, and the delegation from the different townships will probably be allowed to settle the matter. According to the tacit understanding they should do so. In all fairness this county is entitled to the nomination. We do not know that there will be many candidates for this position, though there may be several. We would not say anything derogatory of any of the candidates, but we do feel inclined to urge the nomination of E. H. Funston for that office for several reasons.

It will be admitted that there is considerable feeling between the two towns of Humboldt and Iola, and that while Iola might urge this or that man Humboldt with equal propriety, could urge the claims of some of her citizens. But Mr. F's location is removed from either town, and is not in fact in either township. Local feeling should not in his case cut any figure whatever. With others it might injure the party vote in a large degree. We cannot, as has been suggested advocate an Iola man for this position; while we should be pleased to see one elected yet we do not feel as though a local fight between the two towns would add to the party strength. The nomination of such a man would be erroneous in our judgment. Mr. Funston's location, Deer Creek township adjoining Anderson county, would be acceptable to that county in a high degree. His well known firmness on all questions of local interest robs the cry of "locality candidate" of all its sting.

In view of his eminent qualifications, coupled with superior claims upon the party we think his nomination a judicious one. His past record has been that of a consistent, straight forward Republican, and as such, he should be nominated.

The name of Hon. D. W. Finney, of Woodson county has been suggested for the office of Lieutenant Governor.
