WASHINGTON, Dec. 6.
The Republican of the city in its extra has the
following
By the arrival of a Government transport at
Fortress Monroe last evening, the Government have
advices from Sherman to the 6th day of December
and that when the steamer left, information reached
Savannah that Sherman's advanced cavalry were
within six miles of the city
They are making great efforts for the defense of
Savannah.
Boys 13 years old, and every woman, are at work
entrenching
