OUR EDUCATORS
CHANGES AND PROMOTION.
Among Teachers—Mr. Benson Resigns.

The regular bi-weekly meeting of the Board of Education was held last evening, President Baird in the chair. The Teachers' Committee reported the following changes among teachers, and the report was accepted:

Misses Emma A. Coyle, Addie Conner, Sidney A. Wells and Sallie C. Bye to be first, fourth, fifth and sixth assistants respectively in Boys' Grammar School No. 4; Misses Rebecca A. Pyle, Susan Weir, Clara E. Countiss and Anna R. Pearson to be third, fourth, fifth and sixth assistants respectively in Girls' Grammar School No. 4.

Misses Lizzie Black and Sallie M. Jones to be respectively assistant principal and first assistant in School No. 11: Misses Clara Mendenhall, Ella M. Marvell, Ellen Walker and Mary Dennison to be second, third, fourth and fifth assistants of School No. 2; Misses Cecilia A. Magarity and Mary J. Wheeler to be assistant principals of Schools Nos. 19 and 20 respectively.

The Committee on School No. 11 were authorized to have the blackboard repaired at a cost not to exceed $5, and the Committee on No. 16 were granted power to have new glass put in the windows.

The Keystone Furniture Company having neglected to furnish a teacher's desk in school No. 4, as per contract, the Secretary was directed to write for it.

The bond of J. R. D. Seals & Sons, the contractors for school No. 20, was ordered to be cancelled.

The committee appointed on the advisability of a new school house over Eleventh street bridge, reported that there was an urgent necessity for such a building, and that the one at present there did not by any means answer the requirements demanded. F. Oscar Bennett offered a lot on Claymont street, 40x100 feet, to the Board, and Eli Mendenhall offered an adjoining lot, 30x80 feet. These two could be purchased for $1,500. On motion of Mr. Grier, the report was accepted.

Mr. Sample spoke of the terribly muddy condition of the approaches to school No. 19, and moved that the Board petition Council to lay 300 yards of board walk to the school. Mr. Morrow moved that the Committee on No. 19 be authorized to plank the approach to that school. This met with opposition from Mr. Grier, and was amended by Dr. Keables, to the effect that the Committee on No. 11 be allowed to re-plank the walk to its school. Mr. Willey then offered a substitute to this, that the Committee on No. 19 be requested to obtain signers to a petition to City Council asking Council to do the work. On motion of Dr. Keables, No. 11 was included, and the substitute was adopted.

Superintendent Harlan was directed to notify the Principals of the various schools in regard to the new rule of the Board in reference to allowing pupils to go out during school hours.

On motion of Dr. McKay, a lot of old furniture was donated to the Home for Friendless and Destitute Children.

The resignation of N. R. Benson, Jr., a member from the Fifth ward was read and accepted.

Secretary Morrow read a statement of the condition of the Board, which showed that the Board had contracted debts $2,000 in excess of funds on hand, most of which was for extras for No. 4. The motion of Dr. McKay to lay the matter over until next meeting, was adopted.

On motion of Mr. Grier, the chairman of Committee on Fire Escapes was requested to furnish the Legislative Committee with an estimate of the cost of escapes for the various buildings.

The Board at 8:50 adjourned.

Orders were drawn during the evening to the following parties and the annexed amounts.

Committee on No. 6, $6.72, and Roberts and Mixter, $20.
