Old Man Left In Shaft of Mine to Die.

Edward Mortimer, a gray-haired miner, 68 years old, is the center of a story emanating from Dawson, where he is said to have been kidnapped and lowered into a shaft thirty-five feet deep on Thistle creek, 179 miles from Dawson. His captors demanded $600 as the price of release, but on being told that he had no money, left him, apparently to perish. After twelve hours of effort the old man succeeded in climbing to the surface of the shaft by means of sticks stuck in the side of the shaft, and after wandering eight miles found a canoe, which brought him to Dawson, where he claimed police protection.
