Mr. William Sturdivent, mate of the schooner William, from Plymouth, bound to St. Eustatia, arrived here on Wednesday last, who informs that the above schooner on the 22d Feb. last, in the evening, struck on the Bermuda reef, and went to pieces immediately; that the company consisting of Mess. Charles Dyer, master, Nathaniel Brown, Reuben Totman, Waterman Thomas, himself and a negro, all belonging to Plymouth, endeavoured to save themselves by fastening to different parts of the wreck: that the next day they all got on a piece of the deck, except the negro who was drowned; that they continued in this miserable situation, exposed to a rough sea, and destitute of any subsistence, several days; that on the third day Brown died: the Master, Totman, and Thomas died on the fourth day: that he must have famished himself, had he not, when it rained, adopted the following expedient to obtain drink, he untied his hair, which was very long, and taking the ends of it in his mouth, as the rain fell on his head, he sucked it in thereby-Providentially on the sixth day he was taken up by a fishing boat from St. Martins, where he was carried, and kindly treated; that from St. Martins he took passage to Falmouth, and from thence came to this town.

Sturdivent survived by sucking rain from his long hair. Rescued sixth day by St. Martins fishing boat, treated kindly, then passage to Falmouth and to this town, arriving Wednesday last.
