Event Details
Schooner William from Plymouth bound to St. Eustatia struck Bermuda reef on 22d Feb. last in evening and went to pieces immediately. Crew of Charles Dyer (master), Nathaniel Brown, Reuben Totman, Waterman Thomas, William Sturdivent (mate), and a negro from Plymouth fastened to wreck to save themselves. Next day all except negro (drowned) got on piece of deck. Exposed to rough sea without subsistence for several days. Brown died third day; master, Totman, Thomas died fourth day. Sturdivent survived by sucking rain from his long hair. Rescued sixth day by St. Martins fishing boat, treated kindly, then passage to Falmouth and to this town, arriving Wednesday last.
