On the 20th of May the Right Hon. the Lord Mayor attended by the Jail Committee, for re-building Newgate, laid the first stone of the new jail, under which were placed several gold pieces of coin, of his present Majesty. At the conclusion of the ceremony, his Lordship drank success to the building, that the liberties of the people might be as lasting as that stone, and that the place might want inhabitants; and ordered 20 Guineas to be given the workmen to drink. N.45 was cut on the stone in very large characters.
