School Will Issue Progress Reports This Week

Parents will be interested to know that several changes in the Nome Elementary School are taking place this year. One change is the reporting system. Report cards are being issued each nine weeks this year instead of the regular six weeks as in the past. However, it was the feeling of both a reporting system committee and the Board of Education that this period was too long to go without some report of progress to parents. A plan was adopted to present an interim report to all parents for the four and one-half weeks period. This report indicates whether your child's progress is satisfactory or unsatisfactory. The interim report which will be sent home on Oct. 3 is a single sheet of mimeographed paper. At the first reporting period or on Nov. 2, parents will receive the regular report cards.

A new report card has been developed for the primary school, but students in the intermediate grades will have the same cards as in the past. This new card was designed for use in our new ungraded primary and is entirely different than the one used before.

Elementary Principal Marc Beauchamp said: "In conjunction with the report card, a system of parent-teacher conference will be used in reporting pupil progress. As some of the parents will recall, one first grade teacher held such conferences twice during the last year. The results were highly gratifying to us and we feel the visiting parents also felt the talk was valuable. So this year we will be substituting a talk for a written card. This conference system will be used during the first and third reporting period. The report card will be sent home for the two remaining periods.

"It is hoped that parents will find our new reporting system much more satisfactory and interesting than the old system. We feel that people are interested in what their children are reading, their progress in general and any activities that they may be engaged in at the moment."
