Preliminary cleaning began this morning under the direction of a local committee to put the Gilbert House in readiness for arrival of the director and campers later this week. Rev. and Mrs. Edward Redman who will be in charge, are at present at a Conference of Friends Churches of North America, meeting in Manitoba in Canada.
Actual renovation of the property will be started Saturday when a Work Holiday will bring a group of about ten people from Detroit under the direction of Ellis H. Finster, Grosse Pointe, and about ten students from the University of Michigan, under the leadership of Miss Dorothy Arthur of the Student Religious Association.
Although the staff to be in charge of activities is not completed, the following have been accepted to date: Miss Margaret Sweet, director of the nursery schools in the Cleveland Trade School; and Miss Louise Vigmostad of Detroit, who will be in charge of work among small children. Miss Helen Tobiska, occupational therapist at the Ypsilanti State Hospital, will be in charge of handicraft. Allan Marks of Grosse Pointe a student at the University, will supervise motion pictures and the playing of recordings.
Miss Francis Vivian of the University Library, will have charge of setting up a reading room and library. An entire truckload of books have been offered to the Board of the Gilbert Neighborhood House by the University Library and the public library in Ann Arbor, according to a letter received by Foster Fletcher, chairman.
There are still vacancies in the work-camp especially for young men seventeen years old and above who will be willing to live in the camp for all or part of the 8-week period. Applications may be made to Rev. Gordon Speer.
An announcement will be made within a week as to the date for an open-house when the community will be invited to visit the Gilbert Neighborhood House and make contributions to help it carry on its work.
Donations for the project are being sought by Mrs. Clarence Starkweather and Mrs. Harold R. Leveret.
Furniture, dishes, cooking utensils and sports equipment are needed.
