THE ELECTION.
The Whigs of New York have again met
their opponents in a Charter Election, and been
defeated. Perhaps our hopes of success were
unreasonable, in view of former results, yet we
did hope that the character and popularity of
our candidate for Mayor gave him a chance of
election, and that the divisions of our opponents
might give us the Council. That these hopes
have been disappointed is not remarkable; but
the large majority obtained by our opponents
is a dishonest one, obtained by the foulest
means. Colonization, double-voting by whole
sale, and systematic violence are the means
by which the Whig party has here been over-
wholmed. So many acts of outrage and fraud
we believe never before disgraced a City elec-
tion. The Sixteenth Ward has been carried
against us by virtue of five hundred bludgeons
whereby three hundred Whig voters were
kept in mortal fear from the Polls; while or-
ganized bands of Loco Focos, hundreds in num-
ber, have ranged from Ward to Ward, casting
three, five and seven votes each for Morris
and the Loco Foco Ward tickets. We are
confident the official canvass will clearly show
that not less than two thousand fraudulent votes
have thus been cast for Morris and the Loco
Foco Charter tickets, giving them all that they
strove or cared to carry.
The naked, simple truth is, that in this
great City, with three hundred thousand in-
habitants, forty thousand legal voters, ten thou-
sand adult males who are not voters, and seven-
ty-three Polls, an Election without a Registra-
tion of voters is a game, in which the most un-
scrupulous will win. Five hundred reckless
men by laying their plans skillfully, can at any
time put in illegal votes enough to give which-
ever party they please an overwhelming major-
ity. They may do this without once swearing in
an illegal vote, if they are squeamish about that
formality. They have only to know certain pla-
ces in the several Wards to claim as their resi-
dences, answer all questions promptly and with
perfect self-possession, and their votes will go
in unchallenged. Thus, while the mass of both
parties vote honestly and in utter ignorance of
all fraud, a small knot of gamblers and knaves
may impose on New York just such a Govern-
ment as they choose! This is virtually, clear-
ly asserted by the Loco-Focos themselves in
their clamor about 'Pipe laying,' but to every
effort to establish an effectual barrier against
such frauds, they oppose a stubborn and un-
reasoning hostility. They have broken down
the only law which could stop such iniquities,
and do not even propose or desire anything in
its stead! They have opened wide the door
to all manner of Election frauds, and vainly will
they seek to escape the odium of the conse-
quences which ensue, while they suggest no
remedy and quietly profit by the deluge of cor-
ruption and fraud which they have let in to tra-
ple on the Rights and destroy the Morals of
the People
Up to one o'clock yesterday, we had high
hopes of a Whig triumph; in the afternoon,
every thing went against us. Our friends were
driven away from many of the Polls and over-
awed at others by violence; and hosts of fraud-
ulent votes were cast by men who had alrea-
dy voted at other Wards. We shall give par-
ticulars of many acts of violence and proofs of
illegal voting to morrow. For the present, we
can only state that only one Whig (Whitfield
Case) in the Twelfth Ward, and one in the
Sixteenth, were bludgeoned, utterly without
provocation, and most severely if not danger-
ously injured.
The Whig split in the First Ward did us
great harm-the supporters of the split for Col-
lector selling the whole Whig ticket for Col-
lector votes! We could not have believed
this beforehand-who could!-N. Y. Tribune
