MAN HUNT IN INDIANA.

Lawyer Who Sought to Oust Knox From Cabinet Accused by Girl's Father.

Columbus, Ind., May 14.—Charles W. Caldwell, the lawyer who sought to oust Secretary of State Philander C. Knox from President Taft's Cabinet, is in custody here pending investigation of a serious charge.

Caldwell was found in his office here this morning after bloodhounds and armed men had sought him at Elizabethtown last night. Caldwell is married. He is accused by A. M. Remy of Elizabethtown of making secret visits to his sixteen-year-old daughter Belah Remy. Remy says he shot at Caldwell in his orchard last night and then gave the alarm and started a manhunt. Sheriff Cox was called from Columbus and bloodhounds were brought from Franklin in an automobile. The dogs took a trail and led a circuitous route through fields, woods, barnyards and over a large scope of country west of Elizabethtown. The trail was lost a mile east of Aralia about 6 o'clock A. M.

Caldwell was found in his office here this morning. He expressed indignation at the charge and denied that he had had anything to do with Remy's daughter when confronted by Remy. He said he was in his office asleep all night. In the court of Justice Kinney he faced two charges filed by Remy for surety of the peace. He was unable to give bond and was taken back to jail to await his preliminary hearing, which will be held to-morrow.

Late this afternoon Caldwell gave evidence of suffering and a physician was called. He refused to admit anything, but an examination showed that a bullet had lodged in Caldwell's hip.
