The Hibernia royal steamer, arrived at Boston on Tuesday morning, bringing London and Liverpool dates of the 19th ult. We are indebted to Thompson & Co's Express for Willmer & Smith's European News of that date, from which we quote.
The public feeling on the Oregon Question had somewhat subsided—or rather a new question—the Maynooth Roman Catholic College question—has drawn away and engrossed the public attention. Annexation was evidently very little cared for in England; although the question had assumed a shape more interesting to the foreign opponents of Annexation, by the intelligence that Texas was itself reluctant to accede to the terms of admission.
The great domestic question in England was the grant to the College of Maynooth, which Sir Robert Peel was resolved to carry through. It is obviously the design to win the favor of Ireland, which the government attitude on the repeal agitation threw warmly in another direction. Excitement and agitation pervaded the country.
Cotton which had advanced on the first blush of the Oregon agitation, had gradually fallen back, but was firm, with a steady uniform demand.
Money was abundant, and interest low.
The Queen of England contemplates a visit to Ireland.
Sir Robert Peel's great financial measure had not gone through Parliament.
A rumor prevails that several regiments would be drawn from Ireland, and that Scotch troops are to be sent to Canada.
The American Provision Market has improved by the accounts which the Cambria brought home. Previously, the market was firm, but they led to an advance in the rates. Prime brands of beef have realized from 70s to 75s., and the same descriptions of Pork 59s to 60s. Cheese has advanced 2s. on previous rates. The impression is general, that the present year will witness a greatly increased demand for American Cheese.
In American Butter, there has been less doing, owing to the heavy arrival of Dutch Butter, and other causes. The more detailed accounts of the American Provision Market, under the proper head, contain encouraging views of the future.
