Full Text
The Christian at Work in discussing affairs in Louisiana, says: "Nor should this matter be regarded at all from merely a sectional standpoint—it becomes a national matter, and the question arises, Have the States any right which the Federal Government is bound to respect? An unwarrantable and dangerous departure from the organic law upon which our Republican Government is founded—this military interference by the President's direction is indefensible and utterly without the shadow of right. It is not only an insult to the State, it is a direct challenge as well to the Government and people of every State in the Union; for as was forcibly said a century ago, the right to tax a penny was a right to tax a pound, so if the President has a right to disperse the Legislature of one State, why may he not crush out the Governments of every State in the Union? We are not unmindful of General Grant's services to his country, but neither his services nor his abilities are matters of consideration when he tramples upon popular right as in this instance; on the contrary, distinguished services only make failure and wrongdoing the more conspicuous."
