City and State Affairs.

Compliment to Lynchburg.—Brownlow's Knoxville Whig, in speaking of the subscription made by this city to the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad ($500,000) says:

"There is not a city or town in this Union which, according to its population and wealth, has done as much for railroads as Lynchburg. The great, growing, and wealthy city of Philadelphia county together with Pittsburgh and Alleghany city averages only $24.46 for each inhabitant. We are unable to state what the average for each free inhabitant of Knoxville and Knox county would be, but we venture the assertion that it will be less than half of this. The subscription paid by this city but with the Roads coming into this city we will..."
